The Rio Grande Historical Collections, Hobson-Huntsinger University Archives, and Special Collections serves the New Mexico State University Library  by acting as a repository for non-current university records and for manuscripts, personal papers and non-circulating material documenting the cultural heritage and history of New Mexico and the Southwest.

The Rio Grande Historical Collections acquires, preserves, and makes available for research records of organizations, personal papers, and other unpublished materials relating to New Mexico and the adjacent Spanish Borderlands.  Materials from other areas also are accepted providing they generally support the research needs of students and faculty of New Mexico State University.  

The Hobson-Huntsinger University Archives strives to collect, appraise, and preserve records of enduring value created by administrators, faculty, students and alumni of New Mexico State University.  The archives also provides information services which support University administrators in the performance of their duties. 

 The Special Collections houses the library's non-circulating published research materials including books, periodicals, maps and newspapers relating to the culture, environment, history, people and resources of New Mexico; materials focusing on the Southwest and the Borderlands; and materials supporting specialized University programs.
