The Loretto Academy of Las Cruces

The Loretto Academy building in Las Cruces.

The Sisters of Loretto arrived in Las Cruces in 1870 and established the first school in Southern New Mexico.  The academy survived early years of poverty.  Through good leadership and community support the academy grew and prospered through the years.  Dwindling enrollment in the early part of the twentieth century marked the beginning of the end for the Academy.   The Las Cruces Loretto Academy closed its doors forever in 1943.

This exhibition illustrates the history of the Sisters of Loretto in Las Cruces, shows contributions they made to the community, and explores the lives of students at the Loretto Academy.
