Diaries and Letters

 

Letter from Gerald Thomas to his parents dated November 23, 1942.  Thomas is waiting to hear what his orders will be.  In a postscript on the back side of the letter he writes, "P.S. I haven't flown any for about 5 days and already I miss the roar of airplane motors.  Flying sure gets in a persons blood."

Thomas's diary from 1943-1944 while aboard the U.S.S. Ranger and part of Torpedo Squadron Four.  

Thomas kept note of any action that happened during the day, the weather conditions, and how people spent their spare time.

Letter from the Secretary of the Navy to Gerald Thomas presenting him with the Distinguished Flying Cross.  Thomas received the citation for his service as a pilot in Torpedo Squadron Four during operations against Japanese forces in the Philippine Islands on November 13, 1944.

Dive bombers aboard the U.S.S. Essesx were replaced by two Marie fighter squadrons (VMF-124 and VMF-213) due to heavy losses.

Thomas collected the signatures of the Marines who served on board the Essex.
