The purpose of the Rio Grande Historical Collections is to acquire, preserve, and make available for research records of organizations, personal papers, and other unpublished materials which document the cultural heritage and history of New Mexico and the Southwestern experience. The Collections solicits and encourages gifts and donations of materials appropriate for its archives.
The geographic scope of the collection includes all of New Mexico and the Spanish Borderlands. Materials from other areas may be accepted provided such materials relate to New Mexico and the southwest or more generally support the research needs of students and faculty of New Mexico State University.
The Collections will place primary emphasis upon the acquisition of research materials on topics of special interest to a land grant university. Such subjects would include early settlement; ranching; irrigated and dry-land farming and other pursuits related to the production of food and fiber; the management and use of all natural resources including water, minerals, alternative energy sources, timber and range lands, and wildlife; science and technology, business, commerce and industry; politics and government; literature and cultural affairs; military affairs; education and social affairs and conditions; and other topics deemed important to the education, research, and public service programs of New Mexico State University.
Some typical types of these documentary materials would include diaries; correspondence; subject and other operation files; minutes, proceedings, periodic and research reports and studies; financial records; legal papers; literary manuscripts, memoirs, speeches, and research notes; printed materials such as newsletters, pamphlets, brochures, flyers, broadsides and programs; photographic materials such as negatives, prints, and movie film; sound recordings, maps and blueprints; and charts.
